Telling the truth is not libel

Interesting decision by the Supreme Court of Canada that proponents say will expand the boundaries of free speech.

Essentially they say that bloggers are covered by the same laws as newspapers and other news media, in the sense that they can and should report vigorously and robustly on newsworthy items. Quote: “Although the court acknowledged that free expression does not “confer a licence to ruin reputation,” it argued society is best served by fearless commentary and investigative journalism.

That is an interesting opinion that hasn’t been tested in a Court of Law in South Africa as far as I know, but our ECT law is quite modern and I feel we will receive similar outcomes in SA when faced with libel charges against websites.

So, bloggers, as long as you remain truthful and refrain from damaging reputation, you can keep on publishing. That is good news.
